Google And Imax Partner Up To Build Virtual Reality Camera!

So this is a thing!

Today at Google’s annual developer conference the online giant announced it and Imax are teaming to develop a high-resolution, virtual reality, cinema-grade Imax camera that can create full 360-degree, 3D content. Wow, that’s a mouthful, lets hope they develop a catchier title. The camera will be built to utilize the Jump platform, Jump being an entire ecosystem for creating virtual reality videos, which we are hoping could help VR take off by making it much more accessible create. Google will also have exclusive access to pre-existing Imax documentary content for conversion and use with Google’s VR technology.

“Today’s partnership with Google takes us into the next frontier of immersive experiences – virtual reality – and we look forward to working with them to provide our filmmaker partners and other content creators with a level of VR capture quality not yet seen in this space,VR marks an exciting area of opportunity for Imax, and we believe this agreement, which enables us to participate in image capture and content creation, is an important first step in our broader VR strategy.”

News like this further reinforces that the age of virtual reality is upon us and that it’s not just a gimmick!
