Colossal is a refreshing change of pace compared to all of the big blockbusters that are now being released. To see these story elements appear in the film is brilliant, along with being genuinely surprised and actually invested in a story not knowing where it’s going to go, all because this film is truly original and different.
There’s definitely a sci-fi fantasy element and it does involve a monster rampaging through a city, beyond that the film is also a story about a girl who is trying to come to terms with alcoholism and trying to clean up her life and a part of that story is where it struggles.
The monster elements of this movie are really cool and unique, especially the ending, I really liked the way they went about doing it and even the last shot is really great, I love seeing a movie that has a twist to it that I’ve never seen before. It’s the more standard aspects of this story that we’ve seen many times in films before, that didn’t feel as strong as the fantasy element, but it is nonetheless ballsy and ambitious to try that.
Anne Hathaway is really good in this movie, she injects a lot of nuance to her performance and a lot of subtleties that she adds with both the humorous and dramatic aspects of the film.
The biggest issue I have with the story is a sudden change to a character and I do mean a sudden change. In one scene, this character is a sweet loving person, who you could truly get along with, then the next, the character is a truly horrifying individual, who you would stay far away from, and it’s important to the film but it comes out of nowhere.
However, the fact that we have an original and different movie in the Cinema right now gets my recommendation of seeing it in the Cinema, it’s funny and unique with great performances despite the fact the story is uneven at times, it’s a lot of fun.
Well that’s my two cents on the film Colossal, please let me know what you think of the film down below and as always, I am Mr Moody and it’s been my pleasure to serve you.
